Club Volvic Music Interview, Part 2 (Oct-12-2005)
Part 2 of 4.

"There is 'darkness in the heart' of everyone. I believe that part is also the real me."
Q: The title of the latest album, "DIABOLOS", means 'devil'. What is the most important part of this work?
A: What I wanted to express was not the literal meaning of 'devil', but the 'darkness in the heart' that everyone possesses. Why that darkness is born. I think that is part of the theme conveyed by the main characters in this work. It is the basis/foundation of the story, and the preceding single was made with that (theme) in mind. Of course, each song is like a piece to the puzzle, so each song should be enjoyed freely as an individual piece. On the album cover, I'm holding a mask that has my face on it, but under the mask there is 'another me'. I believe that both of those faces are the real me.

"I want this long story, carried within myself, to be expressed in many different forms."
Q: In addition to music, you've released a movie and books/publications. What is it that you want to convey through those things?
A: I am trying to express this story, not just through music, but also through images/video[1], novels and artwork. Sound is something that can be freely interpreted through one's imagination, right? But interpreting sound alone leaves parts (of the story) that can't be seen clearly. So I think that images/video[1] can reveal those parts. This work is one link in the long story called "MOON". "MOON" is made up of four parts, but the previous two albums[2] are part of the fourth chapter, while "DIABOLOS" is part of the second chapter, continuing on from that point. I think it would be good if I can ultimately complete all of the chapters.

"Images suddenly descend in front of my eyes when I'm zoning out[3]."
Q: How does the story underlying the songs (first) come about[4]?
A: It 'descends' unconsciously. It often happens when I'm zoning out[3] or when I'm riding in the car and looking at the scenery. I record (the images that come to mind) into the IC recorder. Like a play-by-play broadcast (laughs). That has been happening to me since I was a kid. It's like a blank screen is put in front of my eyes, and images are reflected onto it. I was always puzzled as to why that kind of thing happened. Then around age 20, there came a time when I started wondering about my own existence. If there's meaning in my existence, then there must be meaning in those images. That's why I believe I should preserve (those images) in my work.
The next update will be on 10/26. Look forward to it!
Notes:
[1] "eizou": picture; image as on television.
[2] The albums MOON and Crescent.
[3] "bootto suru": having nothing on your mind; mentally drift away to an empty, dreamy space; space out; doing nothing out of boredom. Sorry for using the term "zoning out" which I think is American slang, but it was the closest I could get to the meaning.
[4] "umaretakuru": literally, come to be born.

Q: Please tell us one of your secrets.
A: "I am extremely strong when it comes to (tolerating) pain.
The soles of my feet are my predominant weakness.
I guess?
I really can't take foot massages.
...
Volvic!!"

Translator comments:
Of course, each song is like a piece to the puzzle, so each song should be enjoyed freely as an individual piece.
The fun is in putting the pieces together, isn't it? For now, the pieces are still a jumble for me, and I haven't put much effort into piecing them together to form the whole story. I think I'll continue enjoying them as individual pieces for now. ^^ Ooh, and very cool how he talks about the album cover...
I want this long story, carried within myself, to be expressed in many different forms.
I love how he always wants to expand outside of music and express his works through visual media. Listening to his music paints a picture in my mind of the story conveyed by the song, but having his own vision presented to us in movies, artwork, anime, etc., would truly allow his story to reach us. And the way he presents such things visually, there is still so much room for our own interpretations of the story.
If there's meaning in my existence, then there must be meaning in those images. That's why I believe I should preserve (those images) in my work.
My favorite part of the interview! He's said before that these images just come to him, but to hear him recognize the importance and weight of those images really blows me away. He really is putting himself into his work, isn't he. Leaving a bit of himself for the next generations. There must be something in myself that I believe has meaning, that I want to preserve as well. Gackt always reminds me to keep searching for that thing that only I can do. We all have it.
... Volvic!!! XD :D :D :D :D

Awesome job on this translation! I love reading his thoughts on his dual nature. The images bit is also very familiar... that's how I write-- random, sudden images, or a random character voice breaking into my thoughts. At least I'm not the only one ^^
So much is rattling around in my head after reading it, but I'm not stringing thoughts together well right now. I bet you can guess why ^^;;;
October 16 2005, 03:06:16 UTC 6 years ago
It really is, and it's so inspiring. Such great motivation to keep us going, isn't it?
Thanks! ^^ I'm glad you enjoyed reading it. Seems like a lot of people have the same thing happen where they see/hear sudden thoughts. I wonder what that's like.
Yup, I know exactly why!! *puts you to bed* XD

"Like a play-by-play broadcast (laughs). That has been happening to me since I was a kid. It's like a blank screen is put in front of my eyes, and images are reflected onto it."
Falls over. Literally falls over. He just didn't say that again did he? He's mentioned it before but not that flat out...I do the same thing too. Maybe I am not so odd after all? ^_^
And on a lighter note:
A: "I am extremely strong when it comes to (tolerating) pain.
The soles of my feet are my predominant weakness.
I guess?
I really can't take foot massages.
..."
I guess I should never offer him one of my amazing foot massages then..*laughs*
October 16 2005, 06:11:54 UTC 6 years ago
Hahaha!! I don't think he'd take you up such an offer. ^^

That was interesting how he talked about the album cover. I've always thought of it like he explains it, but I never put any real thought into what it has to do with the theme. Hmm...*wonders*
Hmm...Gackt zoning out. He seems to do that lots, huh? ^^ I think I have a tendency to do that too, but I never thought of any of the images being a part of my existence! That's a rather interesting concept!
Thank you for the translations! ^^
October 16 2005, 06:14:55 UTC 6 years ago
Yeah you're right, he does zone out a lot. You get images too? Seems like that happens to everyone! It's really fascinating.
You're welcome! :D
October 15 2005, 15:55:35 UTC 6 years ago
I go through that exact same thing, "zoning out" but seeing images as you do. It's daydreaming, where you partly control what you are seeing, sometimes. Other times you have no control and they just appear to you. I used to write lots and lots of stories (most of them I've not written down because they are just.. too extensive @@) but they are still in my head and sometimes, more images will come, even when you think you've had enough. It's like a play acting out in your mind... so I think I can precisely relate to what Gackt is talking about.
Hmm, maybe I should start writing again :P GACKT GIVES MIND POWER!! *eats Diabolos Wheaties*
October 16 2005, 06:16:52 UTC 6 years ago
Wow, that is really interesting! So far, everyone has said the same thing happens to them too. But it sounds like your stories were pretty extensive.
Aww, can I have some of your Diabolos Wheaties? I want that mind power too!! XD

*_*~ thank u!
*Triumphant evil laughter* See people act like you are so stupid to zone out or daydream but that is not always the case! If I could record the stuff that goes through my mind! Even on one average day I could fill warehouses with my imaginative thoughts. My parents, my school, my teachers... they used to think I was completely and utterly insane cuz my imagination was so active. I used to run off by myself for hours and hours doing nothing but play-acting out daydreams, and whole casts of characters that I conjured up. They must have thought I had dissociative personality disorder. I was hauled from psychologist to psychologist, tested my IQ and everything. It put me at quite a disadvantage socially but it was cool, and fun. After the first couple of years in grade school, I stopped and learned to attempt to act normal, but went back to being weird when I hit highschool. To this day I often set aside some time just to zone out and daydream on purpose. I've always believed there was significance in dreams/daydreams/etc.
Gackt (as always) is completely insightful! Of course he is a dreamer... I was sure of that. Its just so nice to see him acknowledge it.
I love you for translating this. I think this is one of the best interviews!!!
October 16 2005, 06:20:18 UTC 6 years ago
Re: *_*~ thank u!
So it happens to you too?! Wow, and you went through so much at a young age. I can see how you would relate to what Gackt has said in this interview. I think it's really great how he put it, that there has to be meaning in it for it to happen. And to preserve those images because it does have meaning.I'm really happy that I was able to bring his words to you through this translation. This is exactly why I do it!! For people like you. :D
October 16 2005, 09:46:35 UTC 6 years ago
It's amazing how everything always makes sense
when Gackt explains it...
even tho otherwise it might just be a blur. XD

The songs are pieces of puzzle eh? Does that mean there's more than one puzzle or everything just fall under the MOON story? But then, it's always interesting to try figure out each parts of the songs and try to put them together. As you said, we need to put lots of efforts to actually piecing them together. I enjoy his works/songs nevertheless ^^
Wow..the way he described the images that just come to him and try preserving them into his work. It's just unbelievable. He really work himself very hard. Go Gackt!!
no foot massages? Awww, that's too bad. Foot massages soo good!! So cute the way he said it. :D
October 16 2005, 18:29:20 UTC 6 years ago
I was wondering about that too. Is it a puzzle within a puzzle, or just one huge puzzle. I think maybe it's all one huge MOON puzzle, come to think of it!
I know, it was really great to hear him say that...
XD I've never had a foot massage~ But very cute the way he said it. :D

Sigh I adore Gackt so much beacuse he is always soo intelligent and so open minded! He crafts his songs with deep, thorough, intelligent, interesting and complex themes and the result: immensely satisfying!! His astute knowledge of human's darkness in the heart coupled with his ability to put them into songs is really remarkable!
I record (the images that come to mind) into the IC recorder.
Ahhh that kinda reminds me of Madagascar where he spoke into the recorder ne.. I feel that this adds a touch of realness to it cause it shows that his thoughts are collected at every point of his life, almost like he's working 24/7 and is always on the lookout for inspirations. Gee! He never fails to impress me *_*

Wasn't that clip so great?! I watched it sooo many times now just so I can hear him say Volvic and laugh. XD XD
Yes! He always puts so much thought into his songs, it really is amazing. I remember that part in Madagascar... And if you recall, he's got those recorders all around his house so that he can pick one up at any time and record his thoughts. So cool!
XD Volvic!!! XD

Volvic!!"
XDDDD Such a dork. ^.^
I'm holding a mask that has my face on it, but under the mask there is 'another me'. I believe that both of those faces are the real me.
That's.... yeah. Masks. Everybody wears masks, don't they? Usually different ones too, depending on the situation/people around you. Say, you have to give a presentation, you make yourself look very professional. Around friends, you put on a more fun/social face. But no matter how many different masks you wear, they are ultimately all part of you. They are all you.
That's what I think this means.
It reminds me of something I read once in a translation of Tea Cup, about the phrase "subete no kimi". It was said to have a meaning like "each and every you", different from "kimi no subete". I feel like it is the same image of the different selves, here.
Heh. Interesting how so many people have the same thing with the daydreaming. Me, I don't have it, not really. My mind is too crowded with (unnecessary) thoughts and worries that I don't really do the zone out/blank mind thing, I always become distracted. Heh, maybe I should just "step back" and watch what goes on in my mind, there might be something interesting? lol
What has begun to happen to me lately though is that words fall into my head. Usually when I'm out walking on the street. These words, I write them down and they ultimately become my poetry.
Thank you for translating! ^.^
And, just once more because it is so cute: "Volvic!!" XD
October 17 2005, 04:12:42 UTC 6 years ago
Yes, I agree with what you've said about how we have many different masks. And I think he wants to emphasize that the 'evil' nature that we all carry is also inside of us, and is still a part of us even though we may cover it with a mask. I never really thought about such a thing, and once again Gackt is making me really think.
Wow, finally someone who doesn't experience what Gackt is describing! I was starting to feel very unspecial and very left out when everyone came out and said they have the ability in varying degrees. This is one thing that always makes me feel 'far away' from Gackt. I think of it as something that creative people have, and I myself have never been a creative person and I don't have the ability which I wish I had. At least you have your poetry come to you, I find that to also be an 'ability' that most people don't have. And for you to be writing it down, you're preserving your existence just like Gackt is doing. What is it that I should be preserving...? That's what I always wonder.
You're welcome! And thank you for your comments as always. I always look forward to yours!!
VOLVIC!!!! XD

She put in effort translating that and it's common courtesy to respect the translator by asking for her permission before you use her translation for reason whatsoever.
But I guess that's something you are lacking and will never be able to understand.
And what the hell does that got to do with re-reading and re-commenting!? Though, seriously, I would love to know how one "re-comments". As for relinking? What's there to relink to when it wasn't "linked" to begin with, but "posted" in her own LJ?
Sweetie pie, your pathetic efforts make me laugh.

I feel that sooo strongly. I was all :D when I read that part. I've always wondered what it was like for him to see those images. Especially the last two sentences. You are right, he is leaving a bit of himself for the next generation. Not just the work he has done, but a very real Gackt, his own self, that he is leaving behind. I think that's... amazing.
For once I wonder, what do I have to leave behind to the next generation? Nandemonaiyo. ._. But though I can't see it now, the future is out there waiting for me. ^^ Can I achieve it? Will I fall or will I fly? I can't wait to know.
XD!! The volvic part!! I was laughing so hard at it! His smile! His laughter!! I think I fell in love all over again. =^^=

There are so many pieces to the Moon Project...sometimes I feel like I am losing track of all of them.... ._.
Awe, reading that he is still figuring out his purpose at this point in his life makes me feel better. Like, I don't have to stress and try to figure it all out now.
Thank you ^_^ this made me smile.

It's a good thing they can be enjoyed just as much as individual peices too, pretty skilled that he can make such dual meaning work!
I'm holding a mask that has my face on it, but under the mask there is 'another me'. I believe that both of those faces are the real me.
just like the multi-faceted man he is to come up with such a design ne!? ^^
